The story started out with a focus on his coaching philosophy, his coaching history including his not so illustrious NFL career, and then moved into his volunteer work on the gang-ridden streets of L.A. What impressed me the most about Coach Carroll was his attitude and his coaching philosophy. He is never a victim, he is never miserable – his glass is always half full – even in circumstances where most anyone else would see the glass as way beyond empty.
When the interviewer referred to a statement made by Charlie Weiss, coach for Notre Dame, about his belief that all football coaches are miserable, Carroll replied "No. I never have been miserable. I keep thinking day to day, that somethin' good's just about to happen, you know. And so, that mentality, whether I'm in a game or coachin' in the midst of the season, I don't know how to think otherwise. And that doesn't take you to misery."
Something good is about to happen. I love that. I believe we find what we are looking for. If we are looking for pain and misery- we will find it. If we are thinking…..even truly believing ….that something good is about to happen – it will. Part of it may be a shift in our own thinking beyond just believing that something good is about to happen – but in seeing something good in every situation. Certainly it is true if I look back at some of the most painful times in my life – there were incredible blessings in those times. I was surrounded by the love of my family and friends, I learned of my own strength, I found amazing new opportunities – and my life is better for having gone through it.
Is there a way, in your situation, to shift your thinking to see the good in each situation, each day, each moment – and maybe even get to a place of believing that something good is about to happen?
Because something good IS about to happen! It is my new mantra.
Stay tuned…..I’ll share more on Coach Carrol’s coaching philosophy in my next blog.
